Toh continues to thrive under the Friday night lights

    by Johnathan Wong
    4/4/2014

Apprentice Kif Toh continued the fairy-tale start to his Kranji career with his fourth victory from just seven rides as he steered Azure to a maiden win in the $65,000 Mr Big 2012 Stakes Initiation over 1200m on Friday.

The New Zealand-bred chestnut was too strong down the straight as he held off the pair of favourites Mister Candy (Barend Vorster) and Orion (Lisa Allpress) to win by margins of a length and three-and-a-half respectively. The winning time on the Short Course was 1min 10.45secs.

Described as a “late bloomer” by trainer Michael Clements, it took Azure, who arrived in Singapore last August, almost eight months before he was deemed ready to make his debut.

We knew he had lots of speed and he showed it at the trials here,” he said. “I brought him from New Zealand and based on what I saw of him, I always knew he had some ability.

We just had to spend some time to get him ready. He’s a late bloomer and it’s nice to see him show what he’s capable of today.

It was a great ride from Kif. He got him to relax and kept him quiet and once they got to the straight he opened him up nicely and he just ran on.”

The Zimbabwean-born handler is Toh’s master and he was delighted by the progress made by the Singaporean rider, who graduated from the Singapore Training Academy for Racing (STAR) programme in 2011.

He’s a very determined lad, very attentive with his work and he learns very fast. He works very hard and I always felt he had what it takes to be a jockey.”

Friday nights have certainly been kind to Toh, who picked up his maiden winner in his first start aboard the Mohd Yusof-trained Leave Me Alone exactly two weeks ago under the floodlights and now boasts a remarkable strike rate of 57 per cent.

I’m just so shocked by everything that’s happened and I have to thank all the trainers and owners for their support,” he said. “I’m still learning a lot and every ride I try my best to learn from my mistakes so that I have more confidence for the next ride.”

Despite his inexperience, he showed maturity in handling Azure ($68), who was racing for the first time, as he guided his chestnut mount into a handy position behind early frontrunner Dragon Walk (Danny Beasley).

This was the first race for this horse so I didn’t want to do too much with him and just tried to see how he would respond,” said Toh.

He jumped well and I was able to cross a few horses and settle him nicely behind the leader while also keeping him nice and relaxed.

He’s not very comfortable with the turf and a few times I had to rebalance him at the straight. But once he hit the straight he had enough speed to get in front and win.”

Quick off the mark with this victory, Azure, a four-year-old by Ishiguru out of Alice Blue Gown, has earned around $35,000 for owner Graham Mackie.

Kif Toh - a young man in a hurry

    by Michael Lee
    28/03/2014

Apprentice jockey Kif Toh had barely come back down to earth after his dream winning debut aboard longshot Leave Me Alone last week that he was sent soaring onto cloud nine again with two more winners from as many rides on Friday night.

His balance and riding style were obviously still rough around the edges, but there was no denying the 26-year-old had not erred in his choice of occupation.

He did have a taste of defeat last Sunday when his sole ride Rapture finished out of the placings, but the way he has bounced straight back to the winner’s circle on Friday with both of his two rides for the night has certainly made more pundits sit up and take more than a cursory notice now.

“This win on Zedkaar is even more special as it was for my boss, Mr Clements. He has been the trainer who has supported me the most here,” said Toh.

He teaches me a lot and even sent me to New Zealand for two years.

“When the horse was slower than I thought and dropped back at the rear, I didn’t panic. I just held him together and allowed him to balance up and run relaxed at the rear, even though the track was a bit sticky tonight.

“In the home straight, I felt he was running on well and I just rode him hands and heels to the line.”

While Clements had all along spotted a stack of talent in the young Singaporean, Toh himself was still saying he had a long way to go even if he boasted the amazing strike rate of 75% - or three winners from four rides.

“I don’t take anything for granted. I always try hard and try to gain as much confidence as I can out there on the track,” said Toh.

“I’m still learning what riding is all about and my aim is to go out there and make every effort to learn as much as I can.

“Tonight I rode two winners, but I don’t think it’s all about luck. I work hard and do a lot of homework and it’s paid off.

“All I did was listen to the trainers’ instructions and it’s worked out. Look at the second winner for example (Real Goodman), he was always running relaxed and I knew he had enough stamina to go all the way.

“He nearly got caught on the line, but he was very game and got there ahead of the other horse (Weowna Flyer).

“My four-kilo claim is a big help too. I hope I keep riding winners and get support from other trainers.”

After such a promising start from his apprentice, Clements is expecting he will be fielding a few requests to “borrow” the young man in weeks to come, especially as he claims four kilos and can sure ride.

“He spent two years in New Zealand, but I would say it was at his last year in Singapore after he came back from New Zealand when he really improved,” said the Zimbabwean-born trainer.

“It was good of the owner (Graham Mackie) to give him a horse with some form and Kif rode the horse perfectly.

“I was surprised he showed less speed than I thought he had tonight, but Kif didn’t panic and let him settle at the rear. In the home straight, he just pushed him out.

“I told him not to use the stick on him as it can get complicated for apprentices when they do that.

“He works this horse and he knows him well. He’s a horse who is looking for more distance and he showed it in the way he finished off tonight.”

Nunes in form early in 2014

    Craig Brennan
    1/01/2014

Nunes hit good form early in 2014 in the $65,000 Joy N Happiness Stable Restricted Maiden over 1200m, riding the well supported favourite Lucky Mission, defeating Lisa Allpress aboard Higher Soul, by a half-length, with Super Voice (Alan Munro) three-quarters-of-a-length away third.

Nunes expects bigger and better things to come from Lucky Mission, prepared by Michael Clements, who landed his first victory from just three visits to the racetrack.

He's a nice horse – very professional,” said Nunes. “He should have won at his first start as he didn’t get a lot of clear room.

He then went back to the trials and was back to the Polytrack for his last start and bumped into another nice horse.

Michael then gave him a bit of a break before getting him ready for this race. He did it nicely today and I think he’s going to keep on improving.

He'll be suited stepping up to 1400m and further and I would really like to be able to take a sit on him as well.

Lucky Mission was pressured in front by Mala Mala (Corey Brown) and was certainly left as a sitting shot as the field entered the home straight.

The field fanned across the track with 400m to run. Nunes got to work on Lucky Mission and the gelding responded gamely, kicking strongly inside the final 200m and then holding off a late challenge from Higher Soul.

Lucky Mission was Clements’ first runner for the year and said it was pleasing to get on the board so quickly.

It's my first runner and the first winner,” said Clements. “I couldn’t have asked for a better start.

I think this horse has a lot of scope. It was a great run last time as he fought hard with the winner the whole way and on that run he warranted favouritism.

I would have liked to have seen him have a bit of a softer run, but at the end there was nothing else for him to do but contest the lead.

I really think on his last start and the win today he has a bit of a future and we may now look to contesting some of the ‘Plate’ races that may come his way as a three-year-old.

An Argentinean-bred three-year-old by Wild Event from Doradilla Roma, Lucky Mission took his prizemoney past the $50,000 mark for Brookby Stable with his victory on Wednesday.
